Policy Aims

The aims of our first aid policy are to:

  • Ensure the health and safety of all children, staff, parents, and visitors
  • Ensure that staff and management are aware of their health and safety responsibilities
  • Provide a clear framework for responding to incidents and recording outcomes
  • Maintain compliance with statutory requirements and best practice guidelines

1. Legislative Framework

3. First Aid Procedures

3.1 On-Site Incident Response

3.2 Off-Site Procedures

Minimum requirement: At least one staff member with current paediatric first aid certificate must accompany all trips.

4. First Aid Equipment

4.2 Kit Locations and Maintenance

First aid kits are located in:

  • Main nursery room - clearly marked and accessible
  • Office/reception area
  • Outdoor play area storage
  • Kitchen area
  • All nursery vehicles used for transport

Maintenance: Appointed Person checks kits monthly and replenishes as needed. No medications are stored in first aid kits.

5. Record Keeping and Reporting

5.1 Accident Recording Procedure

5.2 RIDDOR Reportable Incidents

Must be reported to HSE:

  • Fractures (other than fingers, thumbs, toes)
  • Amputations
  • Injuries causing permanent sight loss/reduction
  • Crush injuries to head/torso causing organ damage
  • Serious burns covering more than 10% of body
  • Scalping requiring hospital treatment
  • Loss of consciousness from head injury/asphyxia
  • Any accident resulting in death
